I remember sitting at my desk in my bedroom around the age of 9 years old pretending I was a "secretary" of some sort. I would use my sister's typewriter (did I just tell my age?!) and a phone that didn't work and I would be doing "business". I would sit there for hours talking on a phone that didn't work and typing on a typewriter that was loud. I loved playing "business".
Now, I get to "play" business for real. As a matter of fact, as I am typing this blog, I am doing exactly what I was doing in my bedroom over 20 something years ago. Only now, it's real! In this blog, I am going to share with you the top 5 things I wish I knew before I started my business. Before I get into that, let's take a look at the businesses I have had over the years.
I was 20 years old when I started my first business and have loved the business world ever since! Here are my top 5 things I wish I knew: 1. Collect email addresses. One of the most important parts of a business is your email database, which is also known as a CRM Customer Relationship Management System. This is where you are able to build relationships and market to the people that are interested in what you have to offer in your business. When you go into a store and buy something, at check out, the clerk will ask you for your email address. Why? Because they want to continue to market to you long after you have left their store. To build a profitable business today, you are going to need an effective way to communicate and add value to your target clients and customers other than and in addition to using your social media pages. 2. Proper marketing. When I opened my boutique, I lived by the old adage: if you build it, they will come. I shortly found out that was not the case. In reality, it's really: if you build it and market it, they will come. If you don't put yourself out there and let people know who you are and what you can do for them, you won't have a business. You'll be living your nightmares and not your dreams. Get out there! Don't be afraid to let people know and see how awesome and amazing you are! 3. Systems. Creating systems in your business will help you build and grow your business. Here are a few systems you can begin to focus on in your business right away:
3 questions to help you build those systems:
4. Content creation. I wish I had known how important it is as a leader and business owner to produce content. People look up to you when you position yourself as a business owner. I believe every business owner, no matter what business you are in, should write a book(s) and produce content on a regular basis. Creating content can be in the form of videos, blogs, books, audio classes, articles, etcetera. This allows people to get to know you and who you are. It also helps to establish yourself as an expert in your field. 5. The importance of money and my credit score. Many of us didn't grow up in a house where our parents taught us about the importance of money. I grew up in one of those households. As a consequence, when I became an adult I ruined my credit and I paid all my bills late! It wasn't until my late twenties that I started to realize that my credit shows my credibility to do the things I said I was going to do. When I opened my boutique, I couldn't even open a business banking account because I was in a system called check systems. Check systems is a system that banks use to let all the other banks know that you owe them money. It's not a good thing to have one bank warning another bank about you. However, it is never too late to start making positive changes in the right direction! What tips from this blog post can you take and use immediately in your business? I'd love to hear from you! |
